Overview

Ignacio Guaia joined PLL Legal in 2023 and his main area of practice is international dispute resolution with a particular focus on international commercial arbitration and investment arbitration. He has been involved in matters covering several key industry sectors, including the sectors of mining, energy, sports, telecommunications, life sciences and biotechnology.

Prior to joining the firm, Ignacio Guaia worked as a Senior Associate at LALIVE law firm in Geneva (2011-2021), where he focused on corporate and transaction work, including large infrastructure and energy projects, M&A, contract management, joint ventures, commercial contracts and compliance and international dispute resolution. Before then he was in the corporate and dispute resolution groups of Ortiz & Asociados in BuenosAires, Argentina (2006 – 2010); during that period, he was also seconded to American Express (2009) and IBM (2010) in Buenos Aires.

Main Representative Matters
  • Representing the respondent in a long-term natural gas price revision arbitration (ICC) between two Southern Europeancompanies. The amount in dispute is USD 400 million, Stockholm seat, Swiss and English laws applicable.
  • Advised a South-East European state entity in the setting up and operation of a regional natural gas hub, including sourcing from LNG andpipelines.
  • Representing the respondent in a long-term natural gas price revision arbitration (ICC) between two Southern Europeancompanies. The amount in dispute is USD 600 million, Stockholm seat, Swiss law applicable.
  • Representing a Caucasus State in a highway construction dispute against a Spanish construction holding. The value in dispute is over USD 100million, various applicable laws involved.
  • Advising a Spanish construction company in various M&A prospects and deals in South-America (due diligence, competition regulation, compliance, contracts, guarantees).
  • Represented the respondent (and counterclaimant) in a CIAC commercial arbitration between an Ecuadorian telecommunications holding and its Peruvian and Colombian counterparts relating to various contractual, damages and specific performance claims. The amount in dispute is USD 60 million, Quito seat, Ecuadorian law applicable.
  • Represented the claimant in an international commercial ad hoc gas price revision arbitration (SCC managed) between a Southern European gas company (buyer) and its Russian counterpart (seller) based on two long-term pipeline gas supply agreements. The amount in dispute is € 800million, Stockholm seat, Swiss and Swedish laws applicable.
  • Represented the respondent in an ad hoc treaty-based investment arbitration (PCA administered, The Hague seat, in English and Spanish), betweena Latin-American state and a Canadian mining company relating to various unlawful expropriation, other treaty breaches and compensation claims. The amount in dispute was 200 million.
